PAVING CITY STREETS.
A GOVERNMENT CONTBIBLTION. Finance Committee recommended the (,'ity Council last evening to put in Hand the work of wood-blocking Featherston Street, in front of tlic new General lost Office. 'Die Government, it was stated by the committee, bud agreed to contribute the sum of .£3511 towards the cost.' "This is a very satisfactory thing," said the -Mayor. Councillor l-'letclier asked whether -the street would be blocked, and then torn up again when water and drainage oounections wcro being made. The Mayor said he did not think the engineer,would do that. When the Government, asked the council to wood-block l'cathorston- Street, it was decided to ask the Government to bear part of the cost. Jho offer of. ,£350 was a very fair one. indeed. ■ ' ■-' Councillor Cohen: What is it going to ' The Mayor: It (the amount.. offered by : the Government) is quite half the cost.': : - Councillor Cohen said there, was a. length' of foot-path in Willis'Street which was to be-replaced by wood-blocking, in pursuance of street-widening operations.' This footpath had been awaiting removal for twelve or eighteen months. AVhy should not a start be made with wood-blocking in Willis Street? The .Mayor said that large quantities of wood-blocks wero just arriving, and paving in Featherston Street, Willis Street, and other streets would be taken in hand right away. - .■ ■ --;_■
. In reply to a question by the Mayor, the City Engineer stated that Fowell'issd wood-blocks, which wcro being obtained in New Zealand, were now being, deliveredand ono consignment of general blocks, had como to hand. ... , ..-. ;
