SCOW WINIFRID CAPSIZED.

HARBOUR EVENT ON SATURDAY. The fresh "northerly" which prevailed on Saturday had the effect of capsizing the scow Winifred, which at the time was competing in. a race. When the trouble struck her the Winifred was beating up in the endeavour to make the Coromandel buoy, and was a long way to windward of Point Jerningham. The sail had two reefs down, and. the Winifred was also carrying a small jib, which, as it was not doing any good, was lowered and a larger one .hoisted in its place. The scow was just getting away on another board, when an extra heavy squall struck her, and the jib sheet, which was in tight, jammed, the effect being that she gradually turned right over, the crew climbing on to the bottom. The crew of the Kaitare, which was also competing in the race, saw the mishap, and at once promptly put back to render assistance. The accident was also witnessed from th.o Clyde Quay Wharf, and, in about five minutes, the auxiliary yacht Ruihi ,was on her way to . the rescue. When she arrived on the scene, however, the Winifred's crew had been taken aboard the Kaitare. The Ruihi's arrival was followed quickly by one of the cutter 9 of H.M.S. Cambrian, proceeding under sail. Luckily the crew of the Winifred were all qood swimmers. - The Ruihi took the Winifred in tow, and brought her in to the Boat Harbour. The damage sustained Was the loss of a jib,, a broken bowsprit, and some of the stays had carried away. A part of tho deck was also damaged. The Winifred is owned by Messrs. A. and C. Beaumont.and S. Mason, and wns sailed by Mr. A. Beaumont. In consequence . of the occurrence the race was postponed.
