BANKING PROSPECTS.

ENGLISH VIEW OF AUSTRALIA

By Telegraph—Press Associafjion—Copyright, (Rec. January 18, 10*50 p.m.) London, January 18. The "Financial News" states that on the. whole the Australian banking position is remarkably sound. There is no indication in the statistics of inflations in value or of over-speciL'aj;ion.

The establishment of a. Commonwealth bank must somewhat interfere with, tho functions of the existing banks, ami possibly eauso some temporary limitation of their profit-earning capacity, but Australia must enormously incrcaso in its wealth-earning activities, and banking business will increase pari passu.

There is no reason to predict any permanent falling off, either in the stability of tho Australian banks or of their profitearning powers.
