SALVING S.S. PILOT.
ii CHANGE OF OPERATIONS, With all the pumping which has been carried out by. means of suction pumps during the last few days, there seems to be no difference in ■ the position of the sunken ferry steamer Pilot at the wharf, and,, notwithstanding the fact that the Union S.S. Company's Terawhiti was brought to the scene of operations and got her strong suction pumps going for 25 minutes yesterday, she made no impression, and the Pilot's position remains unchanged. It is barely possible that the port side of the vessel is damaged, and, as this part of the hull is resting on the bottom of tho harbour, it is unapproachable by tho diver.
Steps are now being taken by Mr. C. I- 1 . Pulley, tho contractor, to raise the Pilot by other means.. It is his intention to place wire ropes, or chains, underneath her, and, by means of winches on tho Ferry Wharf and the breastwork, to raise the Pilot until her decks are awash. Then the diver will have an opportunity of examining the vessel's bull thoroughly, and pumping operations will be reverted to. In tho meantime the necessary gear is being got ready, and it is anticipated that these new arrangements will prove successful in raising the sunken vessel.
