SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY.
ACTION BY THE TRADES COUNCIL. Another attempt to bring about tlio Saturday half-holiday in "Wellington was decided upon at the last the Wellington Trades and Labour. Council. To the above end the council has resolved' to get tlio liccesssry petitionforms printed and to endeavour to obtain the required number of signatures to a petition- for a poll en the issue. It is stated that between 3000 and 4000 signatures will bo ncccssary to make the petition effective. For a start tho council will depend on the enthusiasm in its own ranks for securing tlio signatures, but later on, if sufficient names cannot he obtained by voluntary workers, the council will consider tho advisableness cf appointing -paid-can-vassers to do thework. At .the. municipal election two .Years; ago polls -were taken on tho subject, but on]y in Christchurch and Dunedin.' . Jn tho. centres whoro tlio poll'was takoii tho -result indicated that at that time, the Saturday half-holiday-did not-meet .with,favour in the eyes., 0f...th0. bulk of . the electors. Sinco the, last election, however,' the Trades Council considers, thattho week-end holiday has become/m'ucli more popular, lichee the projected movement. ..
