SUMMARY AXD FORECAST.. Rain lias fallen in tho southernmost dis. tricts, but the weather has been very, warm and hazy iu most parts 'of the country. Moderate to strong- easterly winds have prevailed in the far north, westerlies about Cook Strait, and variable winds ehewherc. A. gale is reported this evening at Farewell Spit. Th= barometer has been unsteady, but with a falling t?nd?ncy everywhere. Present judications are- for a chango in weather conditions; increasing haze and humidity preceding unsettled and cloudy weather generally, and a falling barometer, especially in the north. Strong northerly winds are probable north of Westport and Kaikoura, and south-easterlies elsewhere. D. C. DATES. Mct"orologica) Office, Wellington. January 12. 1911. It is proposed to open the deor season for the North Canterbury district on March 15 this year. Kauri timber is now so scarco and dear in Auckland, where a building boom appears to have set in, that many new dwellings aro .composed of rinui, niatni, totara, Oregon, pine, aud other cheaper timbers, only tho doors and sashes being composed of kauri.' A few years ago most Auckland residences were built almost entirely of kauri.
