Mr. Hugo (firo inspector) is on a visit to :Palmerston. Ho, inspetccd tho premises, recently destroyed, in. Fitz-:, herbert Street, and afterwards paid a compliment to the fire-brigade on tho work which they had apparently done in saving-so much of tho building .after, tlie great hold which the firo had obtained. At yesterday's' firo at neld's-.'stablds:?th.cff brigade., -also'-.-did-capital work, especially considering tlie extremely inflammable material which they had to cope with.
, The.' secreta.ry of. tho .Wanganui branch of His Majesty's Association of Veterans has written to Mr. D. Buiok, M.P. for Palmerston, as .follows: —"On behalf of tho.Wanganui;.Veterans, I am requested to.'ihank you for 'pleading their cause in respect to their claims for a military pension. Wo trust that at the next meeting of Parliament your efforts will provo successful, and also wish you a happy and prosperous New Yeatf."
Tho installation of W.M. and investiture of officers of Huia Lodge, No; 171, N.Z.C., took placo yesterday afternoon. P.G.M. Bio. J. Mbncrioff was installing master, and had tho assistance of P.G.M.'s Brosv ;l M.'' Nic'ol -and H. J. Williams. There was a 1 good attendance of the craft, visitors being present from all narts of the district; ' B'ro. A. J. Gratiam was installed as W.M., and the following officers were invested: — 1.P.M., Bro. J. A. Pawson; S.W.; Bro'. J. N., Hodges;' J.W., Bro. J" Stonoj' treasurer, 8r0..5. Abraham; secretary, Bro. W. Hampton., In tho evening an "at home" was held at the' Municipal Hall, when thero ivas again a large attendance,.including many.ladies,, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. , A programme of vocal and instrumental .music..was 0110 of,the features of the evening.
At tho Terrace End bowling green yesterday afternoon a rink from Levin succeeded in wresting the Toms ferns from the Terraco End holders. Tho Levin players were "Messrs.' 'Wilson, Roe, Palmer, and Hankins (skip).
The Terrace End bowlers, who won tho Dixon challenge cup from Pahiatua,. aro delighted victory.'. Tho Terrace "End Club is only a very young ono, but it is turning out some good players.
