TO BE RETIRED.
A SURPRISED INSPECTOR. Inspector O'Brien, of Duncdin, anS Sub-Inspector Green, of Timaru, who are both 61 years of age, and have been in the police forco since 167-1, are to bo retired. There is no intention at present of appointing an Inspector-General .of Police. Later on, when one or two more of tho senior. officers have served the requisite number of years to entitle them to full superannuation, there will.be further retirements, but that will not be for some time. The promotions that will follow the two retirements mentioned above have not yet been decided upon.

Inspector O'Brien, in charge of ths' Dunedin Police District, received a telegram from the Commissioner of Police this afternoon intimating that he was to be retired from the service on superannuation. On being seen by a' "Press" ro■presentative, Inspector O'Brien said ho was 61 years of age, four years under the retiring limit. Ho enjoyed tho very best of health, and never felt more fit for duty than at present. The whole matter had come as a surprise to.him, the telegram from the Commissioner being the first-intimation he received of his pro"' posed -retirement.
