NUMBERING THE PEOPLE.

['REPARATIONS FOR APRIL CENSUS.

Preliminary work for the census in April next is in hand, and it is expected that the appointment of the census enumerators will be announced within the next week or so. The enumerators will control the distribution and collection of the . householders' schedules, which distribution will - be done by sub-enumerators. About 50 census enumerators will be required, and approximately 1000 sub-enumerators. 'I'lio sub-enumerators will be selected for their knowledge of tho districts which they will have to work. Some will be mounted men, others will be cyclists, and the balance will go on foot. The work of collecting the schedules, in the four centres will be pushed through as speedily as possible on account of continual movement of the population, and, in AVellin"ton alone, some 50 or GO collectors, will be at work. Householders can assist by not only having their schedules filled in when they are called for, but (in 'cases where they are moving) making arrangements whereby schedules can be picked up without trouble. It is intended to make the forthcoming census as complete and perfect as it is possible to get it. ' Tho electoral boundaries are to be readjusted on the result in time for the general election. In' addition to the general census it is proposed to take the agricultural' statistics at the same time. This is a reversion to the system which obtained previous to 1895. j
