Captain Edward'F.. Bruen has been appointed to the command of H.M.S. Powerful, flagship.on the Australian station, succeeding Captain Cecil I. Prowse. Captain Bnicn joined the naval service in July, 3890, was promoted lieutenant in 18S9, commander iivlflOl, and. captain „in, Juno, 1906. He was latterly in command of the cruiser Highflyer, of the Devonport division of ..the Home, .fleet. ..■.
The death occurred at ..New Plymouth ■vesterday , of' Lie,utcnant-Col,onel H. G. Payne, 'V.D'. Deceased was for very many years : . an, enthusiastic volunteer, aim, about' twelve months ago, at New Plymouth, was decorated with the volunteer decoration. He had been 36 years in the A Battery, New Zealand Artillery, Auckland, and came to Taranaki several years "ago. He was latterly' in business at Eltharn. 'At the request of friends, there will be. no military funeral, although the deceased Colonel's- fank entitled him to a tiring party of tho whole battalion.— Press Association.
In reference to the paragraph in yesterday's issue stating-that. Mr. Justice Denniston had been taken suddenly ill in London, and had to undergo an operation, we are authoritatively-informed that the operation was a very slight one, and was entirely successful. His Honour was able to leave England twelve days later on. the steamship Ophir, and is due here on January 25.
Mr. l'\ B. Sharp will leave for England on February 8 to attend the sittings' of the I'rivy Council in the cases of Allardico v. Allardice and Norton v. Bertling.
Mr. J. W. Salmond, Solicitor-General, lias returned from a holiday spent, at Kotorua. '
Sir. H. P. Allen, secretary to the Wellington Industrial Association, leaves this evening on a visit to Christchurcli, Dnncdin, and the Otago Lakes. Mr. Allen will transact business in connection with the forthcoming industrial exhibition at Wellington in both the cities named. There will be no" interruption meantime of exhibition business in .Wellington, as llr. Allen lias made full arrangements to have applications for space, etc., dealt with in his absence. Ho expects to return to Wellington on Saturday, January 21.
Mr. D. .G. A. Cooper, Registrar of the Supremo Court, returned yesterday from a holiday visit to the north.
Jlr. Eugene, Stocker,. Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, Wellington, is laid up as a consequence of an accidental injury to his foot.
Mr. J. Studliolme, of Coldstream Estate, Canterbury, who, with his family, has been on a holiday trip abroad, returned to New Zealand by the Turakina yesterday.
.Mr. A. Guise,'who has come'out to New Zealand under engagement to his Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington), ns Controller-General of the Household at Government House, was among the passengers by the Turakina, which arrived at Wellington yesterday. He was accompanied by Mrs. Guise.
Mr. Van Staveren, of this city, is al present visiting Hastings.
Colonel Collins, Controller and AuditorGeneral, is on a visit to Auckland.' He is staying at the Northern Club.
Mr. E. G. Tuckcr, an employee of The Dominion, who lately entered the matrimonial state, was last, .evening presented by the members of the mechanical staff with a handsome marble clock. Mr. W. W. Todd, ljead of the department, made the presentation on behalf of the staff.
Mr. Buckley, mechanician in the employment of "the Government Telephone Department, is to pay'a visit to America and England to make investigations into the latest methods in telephonic systems.
Many mourners followed at the funeral' of the late Mr. F. Parsons, the Interment taking place in Karori cemetery yesterday afternoon. The services in St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral and at'tho graveside were conducted by the Rev. M'Williams and Jones. Messrs. G. W. and H. Parsons (sons), and B. M.' Wilson (son-in-law) were tho chief mourners'. A largo number of relatives and friends we're present, and representatives of the Thorndon and llutt Bowling Clubs attended. Tho organist of St. Paul's (Sir. P.. Parker) played tho "Dead March in Saul," as the procession left the church.
The funeral of the lale Mr. T. A. Tirwin, vice-president of the New Zealand Veterans' Association, took place at the Bolton Street cemetery yesterday afternoon. The service, which was attended by many veterans, was conducted by the Hevs. A. -M. Johnson and D. C. Bates.
Messrs. Abraham and Williams and Messrs. Dalgety and Co. will hold a stock sale at AYaikanae on January 17.
