TURKESTAN EARTHQUAKE. DEMENTED RELATIVES SEARCH RUINS FOR DEAD. FACE OF COUNTRY CHANGED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright* (Eec. January 8, 5.5 St. Petersburg, January 7. As a result of the recent terrible earthquake, clefts three feet wide have appeared in the ground at Vverigi, in Russian Turkestan. ' Many demented people are searching for their relatives, and there is not. a singlo house but what is damaged. As many as seven hundred families are homeless, and are sheltering in schools and barracks. Many of the residents, fearing a repetition of the shocks, are passing their nights in the open air, .although tho weather is intensely cold. The ground in the vicinity of Vyerniyi in some places rose and in others subsidecj. Huge boulders lying on the glaciers on the adjacent snow-fields were hurled out of position. Many persons wore buried in. landslides. Tho roads to Prejevalsky, about 120 miles distant, are impassible, owing to tho changes in the configuration of the country and the fissures in the, ground. A later report states that 200 persons perished. The shocks continue. TWO SHOCKS IN FRANCE. (Rec. January 8, 5.5 p.m.) . Paris, January 7. Two shocks of earthquake have been experienced at Moulins, 191 miles southeast of Paris. SUPPOSED SHOCK IN MELBOURNE.
Melbourne, January 7. Yesterday morning the residents of some of the. southern suburbs were aroused by the repeated shaking of their houses, accompanied, by a rumbling noisa. Somo were so scared that they rushed into the streets in their night-clothes. The seismograph at the Observatory, however, shows no record of a seismic disturbance. SEISMOGRAPH RECORDS. Melbourne, January 7. Tho Observatory seismograph recorded several earth tremors during the week. One, specially severe, occurred on Wernesdoy morning, extending over a period of four hours.
