FIRE-FIGHTING.
TOLL OP. A YEAK'S OUTBREAKS.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) . ' Auckland, January S. Fire losfes in Auckland last year were light in the scale of average. The amount of property immediately involved in buildings and contents through fires within the boundaries of the Auckland Fire Board's district totalled .£220,000, bearing insurance risks amounting in the aggregate to ,£172,000. The total insurance losses for. the' year, howtvw, on these risks, .amounted to .£7300, while tho actual loss of property probably amounted in all to about ,£lo,ooo—a trifling percentage when the value of the . property involved is considered. To eftect this immense saving 2353 men and 265 vehicles were employed, an avferage. of about 27 men and three vehicles to each outbreak. The losses and fairings mentioned do not include three vessels, which would account for a considerable additional amount of property won from the flame's. The year's small loss, therefore, must be viewed with no little gratification, both by insurance companies and the owners of property, making as it does one of Auckland's most satisfactory bars in the record of capital gone up in smoke.
