- (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Westport, January 7. Mr. Sidpey Fry, Associate Member of the Australian Institute of Civil Engineers, who has most successfully acted as director of the Westport School of 'Mines for a number of years, but who has now accepted a position as manager of tho I'oerua goldmine, has severed his connection . with the School of Mines as At a meeting of the council on Friday' night, Mr. Hercus, acting-direc-tor, was appointed to succeed Mr. Fry. Mr. Hercus, as a student and subsequently as assistant assayer, and in various other capacities, has been in the best mines of the Dominion. Mr. Hercus is quite a young man. This district will be represented at the forthcoming Conference of Mining Engineers at Auckland by Mr. Jonathan Dixon (district superintendent) and Mr. Jas. Bradley (analyst to the Westport Coal Company), and Engineer-Lieutenant Sydenham (Admiralty representative), and Mr. Sidney Fry (manager of the Poerna Gold Mining Company).

The South Island Railway Appeal Board will sit at Westport 011 Monday to hear an appeal from Driver Devery against his dismissal from the service.
