MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
4 (Before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) MOKE DESERTION. A FALSE DECLARATION. Peter Connolly pleaded guilty to a charge of having unlawfully deserted from the steamer Drayton Grange on December 29, at Wellington," and to a sceond charge of making a false declaration of his own name before being engaged cn the schooner Isabella ije Fraine cn January 3. Sub-Inspector Norwood informed the Magistrate that accused had left the Drayton Grange on the eve of her departure for London and a substitute engaged had to be paid c£2s. loiter accused had gou-e to tho Government Shipping Office, and, in order that he might be engaged on the coast, lie made a false declaration as to his name and represented that he had last been employed in a steamer other than the Drayton Grange. By Section -138 of the Act, he was liable to a fine of £5 for this latter offence. In answer to the magistrate, accused said lie had nothing to say. He was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for desertion and for the second offence he was fined £2 in default U days' imprisonment, the sentences to bo cumulative.
DRIVEN OUT OF THE SHIP. Tam Knudsen, a Norwegian sailor, was charged with absenting himself without leave from the Italian barque Kins Malcolm on November IS last at t his port. Sub-Inspector Norwood stated that Knudsen,' who had been arrested at Levin, had been practically driven out of the ship by the other sailors, who were all Italians. The King Malcolm had now left the Dominion,' but the agent (Mi;. 'AY. J. Bridson) had .informed the sub-iuspcctor that Knudsen was hardly to blame as lie had been badly assaulted 011 the vessel, and it was now asked that the charge bo withdrawn. The master of the barque had intended to ask that (lie charge be withdrawn before he left, but overlooked it. The charge was accordingly withdrawn by leave of the Court. Knudsen informed the magistrate that he" hid employment at .Levin and would be able to return there. REMANDED TO CHRISTCHURCH. Harry Ronier, lvlio had bec-n arrested the previous night, was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, it being
alleged (lint on September 10 last at Christehureh, he imposed 011 0110 Leopold Colcni'o and obtained an advertisement from the latter by fairly representing that Midi an advertisement' would appear in tho Municipal Bands' concert programme. On the application of Chief .Detective Broberg. accused was remanded to appear at Christehureh this morning. INSOBRIETY. John David Speight, charged with drunkenness, was deemed to bo a habitual inebriate and was sentenced to a mouth's imprisonment. For breach of a prohibition order, the same accused was convicted and discharged. Martin Ford, on a charge of drunkenness, was also sent to gaol for one month. John Handel, for a similar offence, was convicted and discharged. One fust-offending inebriate, who did not appear, was ordered to forfeit his bail of 10s., or undergo 18 Hours' imprisonment.
