Dr. A. Hardwick Smith, medical superintendent of 'the hospital, is at present on a month's holiday leave, which ho is spending in the south. Dr. S. J. Simpson, senior house surgeon at the hospital, is acting-medical superintendent.

Bishop Clcary, recently consecrated to tho See of Auckland, arrived at Christchurch last evening (says a Press Association telegram) and was cordially received by thq Catholic faith. Later Bishop CleaTy was entertained at dinneiv % tho Eight Rev. Dr. Grimes (Bishop of Christchurch) and clergy and presented with a congratulatory 'address. Amongst the guests were tho editors of tho leading ChristchDreh newspapers, who referred to tho compliment paid to tho journalistic profession by the elovation of 0110 whom journalists all admired, not only for tho graceful and trenchant pen he wielded, but also for tho manner in which ho upheld tho highest traditions of journalism.
Constable T. Hickman, of Opunake, will shortly reiiro after forty years' servico (says-the Hawera "Star"). ; Mr. Hickman has had more interesting experiences than most members of the force, and his reminiscences of service in Taranaki must be rich in incident.
