LOCAL AND GENERAL.
•The Postal authorities advise tliat the s.l. Wimmera, which sailed from Sydney at 3 p.m. on January 4 for.Auckland, has on board an Australian mail; also the English mail via. Suez. Tho Wellington portion should reach here by Main Trunk express oil Monday, January 9. At least four trade disputes will probably shortly require the' attention of tho Arbitration Court. Among them are the carpenters' and joiners' dispute, and that of tho tinplate and sheet metal workers,- whoso first and only award was made on February 15, 1902. Other unions that have tiled disputes are the cooks and waiters (in respect of private hotel's, oyster saloons, tearooms, and luncheon rooms), and the wool and grain store employees. Tho latter dis'pnto and that of the saddlers arc still in tho hand's of the Conciliation Commissioner.
The City Council has accepted the tender of li. Y. Walls and Co. for the supply of two miles of .125 cable. ■Unsuccessful tenderers: P. It. Baillie and Co., £356 18s.; A and T. Burt, £313; and Tumbuil and Jones, £360.
Both tho Melrose and Iloseneath service reservoirs are now complete, and largo pipes for pumping purposes are being put clown so that residents of these higher levels should soon find that tho water supply is for them a reality. Wadcstown residents arc not quite "so near'having a regular supply of water, hut the reservoir for that district is about three parts finished.
