BEEF TRUST ON TOP.
EFFECT ON MEAT TRADE, ly TclejrraDh-l'ress Associatian-CoDj'rltrht
Sydney,. January 5. The "Sydney Morning Herald/' commenting on the fact that tbo American Beef Trust controls the meat-producing industry of tho entire world, with the exception of the Australasian trade,-and
referring to tho prediction that heavy advances aro likely to result from the Trust's control, says:—"lt is known tliat tho Trust has already paid some attention to Australia, with what Tesult is only known to the Trust itself. But the Australian producer, although unassailable, perhaps, in his own home, may find ! the ramifications of the Trust difficult to cope with in the world's markets."
SWIFT'S AGENTS IN AUSTRALIA. Some speculation was caused in the meat trade in June last by the presence in Australia of two agents of Swilt and Co., the great Chicago meat firm. One of the visitors, Mr. Otto G. Malcow, a responsible representative of the firm's financial department, had previously been in Australia and New Zealand two years ago, and he then made such exhaustive inquiries into the meat business that he was able to present a monumental report to his principals in Chicago. Earlier in 1910 Mr. Malcow had come under the observation of the Australian trade by purchasing for his firm the extensive La Plata freezing works, owned by Messrs. John Cooke and Co.. of Melbourne, in the Argentine. • Then ho brought out to Australia Mr. KaufTman, one of Swift and Co/s expert stockmen, and they made an exhaustive tour in freezing stores and stockyards. 1 . ""When last here," stated the Sydney "Telegraph" in Juno last, "Mr. Malcow had letters of introduction to leading exporters, but' on this occasion he has not been seen much by them. * The visitors
have been through Melbourne and Sydney, and it is regarded as, perhaps, a coincidence that one or two American stockmen hare since made applications for work in local meat concerns. So far as can bo gathered, employers have' not been able to find room for them. Messrs. Malcoiv and Kaufrman are now in Queensland, and it is rumoured that they have opened negotiations to purchase land in Brisbane."
Mr. Malcow on his previous visit went right through New Zealand, and was twice in Wellington. He was stated to have made very detailed inquiries as to the conditions and management of the meat trade, but very little' information was* gathered as to tite precise objects of tlio tour. Rumours also gained currency that a firm having a large connection in Australia and New had an arrangement with Messrs. Swift and Company, but this was denied. . It is stated that Mr. Malcow purchased sample lots of the different brands of New Zealand frozen meats and shipped them homo to his principals.
