THE FIRE IN JOHNSTON STREET.
CITY COUNCIL WILL INVESTIGATE. Councillor J. P. Luke, M.P., senior councillor, who is controlling the corporation administration during the absence of the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) states that a close investigation of the circumstances surrounding tho recent fatal fire at the Wollesley boardinghouse, in Johnston Street, is to bo made by tlio council. Despite the exacting supervision which is exercised by the council's' officers, in the matter of plans for subdivisions in such establishments, there is still, Mr. Luke considers, room for improvement in the direction of systematic 'inspection, particularly during such occasions as attract largo numbers of visitors to the capital. During holiday time, when tho pressure on tho accommodation was heavy, the fire-escape arrangements were, in certain cases, not. sufficient to cope with anyspecial strain on their resources, and this was a matter which called for careful attention.
