PORT NICHOLSON CLUB
CYCLING CARNIVAL. Tho first combined cycling and athietio:'.: carnival organised in Wellington for about two years was held at the Basin ,Reserve V yesterday afternoon, and proved, .despite adverse weather conditions, a great sue-• • cess. About two thousand spectators viewed the contests of'the day; a'hd some'' <680 was taken at tho gate. Fields in al--:. most every case were good, and many young cyclists who. competed acquitted themselves in a manner that augurs well "> for their future success on the. racing track. Tho high wind that blew through- .' out the afternoon offered a serious impedi- • mcnt to competitors, particularly in the cycling events, and under the circumstances most of the tinies registered weregood. An event that gave rise to nierri- - ment was the musical chair competition - for cyclists. Quaint postures were numer- ■ ous as" the riders hurriedly deserted their ■ machines, for the chairs. ( All events were run off in good time, and an- efficient >' control was exercised by the officials of tho day. As a whole the club is to be ; complimented on a highly' successful meeting, which may possibly herald a revival of tho cycling carnival in Welling-' ton. .
