' A splendid race. Merrie Goer, Nega- ■ tive.and Acrostic led a' bunched field to the straight, where Epsom. Downs came through on tho inside, and won by a length and a half, Ira being- half a dength away third. Time, lmin. 29 3-siSc. . NOTES ON THE. RACING. , Dogfish, All Gold, Laird o' Lethe, Acrostic, Lady ; Kilcheran, and War Queen wero the scratchings in tho Maiden Hack Race, leaving a field of eleven. Roj;al Knight was made a. pronounced favourite, possibly' on his Taratahi running, but lie failed altogether, and the winner turned up in Odessa; who led almost from tho start, arid was never headed. Overheard, who came very fast at the finish, just suffered -defeat by . Rumble, while Daunton was fourth. Girvan was last. ■ / . There were only four starters in the ■ Tuhitarata Handicap,- the withdrawals being Sea Queen, Bally Shannon, Mou 'Ami, and Gawain. Full Rate was made favourite, but at the finish his heavy ■weight evidently told upon'him, and ho was just beaten' on the post by Merrie Frank, whose rider ("Stan." Roid) had a somewhat rough passage down tho ■straight. A breeze militated . slightly against faster time. Longwood, who appeared to be sore, being sloiv at moving, was left badly at tho post. Simplex, who Tan third, completed a mile from a false , start, beforo tne race started. At the .conclusion tho stewards held an inquiry 'into the riding of "Sid." :Boid'on Full Rate, and cautioned him for boring on > 'Merrie: Frank, while coming ; down the ■straight: ' , Riil, First. Battery, and San Lass wero 'the, defections from tho ~Rimutaka Hack .Handicap, thus cutting'the field down to eight starters, in. which Succession ."was " mado.favourite. From'a very good start, Succession, Whitestone, and Mediterran- , ean led the field to the half-mile, where . Mediterranean, moved up , into second jPlace. , A furlong - further on Succession was .leading-by two lengths, and AVhite'stone pulled up. Mr.-Liskirk's mare maintained'her'lead into the. straight, and' •| won fairly easily, by a length.. MediterTariean,'who made a big effort in the last furlong, was' almost' beaten for second place by Rangikapua. First Consul was fourth, Merrie Emerald fifth, Vite sixth, and Lady Volley seventh; - ; The race for. the Wairarapa Cup proved,;a very. fine .event. There were seven stofers;. the only defections-being Outlander",; ' Vibration, - and Merrie Frank. Sands.tream'.was a-, slightly, better favourite' thari/First Battery, the outsiders 1)2iiig' ; and .'Splash , in that order. . Passive," who wasi ' said -t'o! bo in much better heart'than, when she'had been at Awapuni, rnade the running all the way, ■ and,-'in a wiyv was.'unfortunate-in be-: .in£ .beaten; Sandstteam' was ■ almost last • in entering the straight.but, in"the end, he -appeared to ' winsomewhat easily. Field Battery ran a' g6od : race, but covered too much ground. Gunboat was fourth, - Merrie Zealand fifth, and. full of.;-'running, Hilarian sixth,-' and Splash . last." The time;was four-fifths of'a second longer than that'''taken' by Ringdove "and White Lie in .the past two" years." Since tho Wairarapa Cup.. was instituted thirty-three 'yeats ago, the race has been won only three times by horses carrying 9st. ;or over. ■' In 1877 Tambour- .- ina won witlrlost.,'.in 1904 Ghoorka with 9st.,'.and. yesterday Sandstream also carried'9st. '•The. Nursery Handicap, with only four starters!'-was ". a rather tame -affair. At the barrier Sinapis got a break of several lengths froril Bronze, who was about the same distance in frimt of Six Knox. Although Bronze made a strong effort coming into the straight, Sinapis had too much pace, and wqii easily.: Elinore was last. many lengths ..behind. Lehora, Portcullis,'-Allurement, Monsieur ■ Beaucaire,.vand Black Reef -were ... withdrawn from the President's. Handi-. cap,, in which Merrie-Fly-was a' decided favourite. After delaying the field, for . 6ome time, she did not get .-.away-too well and only managed tci come - third. .' Had she got :away she shonld have won; Zealand, who was greatly fancied by his connection, won rather : .easily from British Maid, Who, however, • appeared--to make • her run too late. Aliuapai was , fourth, Merrie -Time fifth, Embrocation sixth, and Lochiela last.

. Penates, - Bally Shannon, and Vibration were. scratched for the Reynolds Handicap, in which'' Siiflb'onnet' was a somewhat better favourite than -: Rill, with Waiwareware the biggest' outsider, of .'the day. '/Hill; who was handled. very well by young Meagher, .had Sunbonnet's measure at the end of half a mile, and finished strongly. Waiwareware, who was jammed after getting a good start, came again in tho straight, and just-beat Sunbonn'et for second place. . Afterthought was prominent for five,.furlongs, and then died away. Leahora was fourth. The scratching' of San Lass, Bracken, Daunton, and Beulah in tho Mokai Hack Welter left a field of eight. • Merrie Goer .was made a-hot favourite: with a large amount of . support forthcoming also, for' Acrostic.' Epsom;' Downs," who' held a good position throughout', made a nice run on the inside'on entering tha straight and won handsomely from Negative, who finished strongly. Ira, who was third, improved ,on his Palmerston running. Merrie Goer was fourth, Foreshot fifth, Acrostic 1 sixth,' Merriletta 1 seventh, and Egypt last.' During the day "Stan" Reid, and Meagher each • rode two- winners, and "Sid" Reid, Hatch, Pine, and - Lambess one' each..
