OBITUARY.
'PROFESSOR BUTCHER, ' By Telegraph-Press Assoeiation-CopyrichK London, December 30. Professor S. H. Butcher, Conservative M.T. for Cambridge University, is dead. ' Professor Samuel Henry Butcher was born in 1850,- and was the eldest son of the late Right Rev.- Samuel Butcher, Bishop of Meath. He was educated at Marlborough and Trinity College, Cambridge, was Bell Scholar in 1870, Senior Classic, and won the Chancellor's Classical Medal in 1873; took his B.A. in tho somo year, and his M.A. three years later. Ho was i Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and Fellow and lecturer at University College, Oxford. From 1882 to 1903, ho was professor of Greek at Edinburgh, held the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature of Dublin, and, the honorary LL.D. of Glasgow, and was a member of the Scottish and Irish University Cowmissions. Ho was also a magistrate for tho ounty of Kerry, a Fellow of the British Academy, and a member of the Cambridge Syndicato for Studios and Examinations. He joined Mr. Lang in a translation of tho Odyssey in a proso version which is now famous, and has written on Demosthenes and Aristotle. Ho also lectured on Greek subjects at Harvard.
