OFF FOE A HOLIDAY. ;■ "PELORUS JACK'S" VACATION. For the last three weeks "Pelorus Jack" has not boen eeon by anxious passengers on tho Kelson boats, and in tho minds of sonio fears were entertained lest ho had been tho victim of foul play, or had died from "natural causes." But a Dsh with an Act of Parliament for itself could hardly bo evDceted to bo on duty unceasinglv Doubtless ho has been feeling the increased strain of the summer traffic and ho has decided to tako his vacation at tho head of Admiralty Bay in peace and quietness. Captain Crawford, of toena, states that fishermen and others had told him that "Pelorus Jack" cou'd bo soon frolicking about in the pliieo "'ndicatcd. In some instances ho had "been swimming closely round tho fishing boats Frequent passengers by tho steamers know that "Jack" is scan anywhere between the Pass and tho head of Pelorus Sound, a stretch of several miles. When last seen, Captain Crawford said ho was meeting tho steamers well towards the Sounds, so that his present quarters are somo eight or nine miles, away. "Pelorus Jack" has been known to go for tlie:o holidays before, and doubtless after a good rest ho wMI bo found again following the steamers, "to tho amusement of all on board. He chooses the cuttlefish typo of diet, and no doubt it .becomes necessary for him to go in search of food' at certain periods' of the veor.
