NOTES AND COMMENTS,

[Br Glekcob.]

'Sportsmen will have much to interest them : on Monday and Tuesday, when race meetings will be held at Ellerslie, Stratford, Bulls, Tauherinikau, and Wuikanao. The principal : event at Bulls is, tho Eangitikei Cup, in which theManawatu Cup winner, Merrivonia, will bavo to put up a 141b.- penalty. This should -not be too muclr for her, as her Awapuni victory was obtained ill. most decisive fashion. Tho way will be paved somewhat for Mr. Ames's mare by the defection of' Lady Medallist, who is racing at Ellerslie, and, on the latest form, ,Teotano and Penza can bavo no chance of success.. This being the case, it would seem_ as if the hardest to beat will be Equitas and Iranui. ,It i 3 said that Boanerges may not bo taken to Bulls,- but will be given., a short respite from activity; . to enable him to freshen up again. This will leave only six runners in the opening event, as Equitas. is to start in the

Cup. thero/js stilli-iaterial enough'for a very interesting race, and though Moree and Sea Queen have recent viiimng'fonn to .recommend them, Irish Rifle, ,wH& 7st.' lOlb. j will probably'dispute every^iheh'of the way with, them. ~ ■' Mr. " T. O'Neill's filly Mclologuo;. which has been strongly supported several times of lato without scoring a win, is engaged in the Maiden Race at' Bulls on Monday. : On the second day of the C.J.C. meeting Reumac ran a good;race in the Hurdles, with list. 131b on ' his back. -. With 81b.. loss at Bulls, and a poorer .field out . against. him,AV. Young's mount will assuredly' start a very sound ifavouritei Tho stables presided over by A. Attwood at Feilding has no fewer than three representatives in the Hack Hurdles at tho llangitikei meeting, so that it appears as if another hurdlo race will be Vi'on by a- horse - ridden by; W. Young. There seems to be, little chance' of any other rider disputing Young's lead in the list of winning horsemen.' Tho writer does not remember a rider over fences winning sixteen races, which is. Young's total, in such a short space of time, viz.j five months. Tho little Stepniak horse, Turna, was very sore after racing on tho opening day of the. Manawatu meeting, and he was sent home the following day.. ' - . Tho Melbourne trainer, R. H. Frew, who. has been on a t trip through tie North Island in search of■ horses likely to make jumpers, returned by the Sydney boat , last night.. . His. mission was not a vory successful one, and sellers in this country,, generally speaking, want more for their horses than Australian buyers are prepared to give;. • The lat-. ter como over here somewhat tied, as pwers on the other : side of the Tasmau Sea do not care, to give big sums for jumpers. Their experiences in the past have, not been pleasant ones, as several very valuable horses are killed, whilst steeplechasmg, each year in Victoria. Jumping ability, not pace, is what is wanted: as a general rule, Aimwell, who was recently purchased by a patron ,of F. Higgott's stables, ?L as commission for his-now owner in tho Open Welter at Ashhurst, but he railed, to flatter, his supporters fit anv part of '-tho race. -': The Wellington Professional Orchestra ivill supply the music at Tauherinikau on Monday and Tuesday next. Scratchings. for the "Wairarapa : R.C.- -meeting are as follow: ongagemehts, Bracken. For all engagements, San Lass. " -.. . .-.

,A_- popular outing for' Monday will no doubt the the.- Wairarapa Racing Club's meeting at - Tauherinilcau. Thero is promise of excellent . sport, . amid the pleasantest . surroundings.". The. acceptances are good,' and Mr. Henrys's handicaps are usually a' guarantee that patrons will see good finishes: Special railway arrangement have, been made for tho occasion, and Wellington people will find that' their comfort has' been well attended ito'. Particulars are advertised. . . : -'; ■ At the * Kaikoura . races on ' Boxing Day,, the principal event was won by the Riccarton-trained Sant Rosaleor. ,* ' Mr. T. Matson, the, South Australian owner-trainer, created a somewhat unique -record at tho Port Adelaide Cup meeting, which opened last Saturday, by starting; two . brothers ,and two .sisters in Calamus, Borassus, Caasavus, and Pandanus. The whole-of this quartette are by- Tapioca from, Thunder Princess. Australian owners would., kick—and with good reason—if any of their, horses incurred, a -penalty, forest handicp as. a .result ; of winniiig yaraitfifeaC. :or.' special, weight race in the "Arrow").- However, I'libtictf 1 tliat the winners of "any" race—not-handicaps only —of a certain amount incur penalties for the Railway Handicap and Auckland. Cup to bo run at the Auckland R.C, meeting. Subsequent to the weights being; declared for the Railway Handicap, ■ Provocation ' won, the Feilding Stakes, and in consequenco his impost for the 'first-mentioned race went up 71b. A penalty in a handicap as a result of winning a w.f.a, scarcely seems correct, and next season :tho Auckland R.C. may possibly ,see fit to. alter, the conditions, of its big races.' ■
