He attempted to'commit suicide. ; . CITY OFFICIALS ARRESTED. :• New York, December 2S. The Mayor, the Chief of Police, and seven city, officials of Gary, Indiana, have been arrested on a charge of having altered votes at the State, election, in November last.
Gary, Indiana, is a town on. the, south shore, of Lake Michigan, l about twentyfive mites from Chicago. ,It was built by the united' States Steel. Corporation, and in it is situated the largest and most "modern steel plant in existence. The work of building the city, and plant was commenced in March, 1906. At the end of 1909 the population of. Gary was approximately 15,000, of whom about a third were employed by the Corporation. The town was named after Judge Gary, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Steel Corporation. A proposal was on foot in Gary earlier in the year to "annex" a number of surrounding towns and form, one large city.
