All started in the'Whitmoro'Handicap, and Brown' Trout was selected as the most likely winner.' The Rover hopped, off .in front, and led for fivo furlongs, when Merry Frank assumed charge. Oliver, on Leolanter,' had been lying back for a brush, a"nd, passing, the stand,'he too'k charge, and won comfortably. The Rover .broke a "blood-vessel', , 'and'was pulled up. , A good favourite, Gladiole, materialised in the • Westbury Hack Handicap,' after leading 'all the way. Seaweed challenged at tho half'distance, but could, not reach nearer ■■than a length. Ahuapai : was a poor third. ' ■ . .' ....■'■ Mntaari, Bally Shannon, and Marton all carried good money in the Clandeboye Welter, and the race proved a splendid one.. Mataari, shot out' just ahead, of Mnrton and Bally Shannon. After-going a furlong, the latter got.cut out, and was sent back last. Across the-bend for home, Marton challenged Mataari, and the pair ran uj! the straight locked together. Marton, on the outside, won by a head. The others were well backed. ~•'. Irnnui and Mendip'finished even favourites in the betting in the President's Handicap. .Another grand:finish resulted in a win for the former, with the other favourite last. • Highden cut out the running from Iranui and Mendip. with the latter pulling double". At the bottom Mendip got into a mix-up, and lost his position. Iranui' took charge .before, the straight, and won -by a length, with the othors in a bunch. Sandstream finished very'fast.
In the Kawau Stakes the public made W. Ryan's mount, Effort, a better favourite than Boanerges, and tho Treutham marc won with ridiculous ease. Warsong .made the p:ice from Hermia, with Boanerges and Effort in. that order. At tho straight entrance, Warsong held command, but Effort van past comfortably, and won in hollow style. ...This made the third successive win of';W. Ryan's mounts. A peculiarity in connection'with the race was that the horses finished in the order they were- hacked on the machine. : , .
A * sensational finish took place in the To Matai Handicap, . for two-year-olds, when the three, placed horses (lashed across the line locked together. Gold Bond was .a hotter favourite than Bronze and Big Blast was next in demand. The latter was the first to show up prominrntly, and led till well down the runniii" whero Bfonzo took a stand, and so die! llanjsiahia. Sticks were produced on the three of them, and they passed the post in a line. .The judge decided in favour of. Bronze by halt''a head. The favourite was. in. a lather after returning to the birdenge, and was fretting badly before the start.
. Bracken had won so easily on the first day that even .tfith his rise in weight'it was difficult to see how ho\could get beaten to-day in th'e Christmas Hack Welter, as the lot behind him-were poor ■in the extreme. He was out first, and led the whole way. Floated looked like troubling him at" the bend, but he stopped to nothing 'jn the run home, while the big horse finished full of running. , A turn up took place in the rare\y.ell I Handicap, when ah outsideer, in First Battery, won, after being tailed off in the early stages of the race. , Gold Battery led from San Lais and Toanga until the six furlongs post, when. San Lass took charge, but First Battery came with a wet sail, and won easily. DUNEDIN. J.C. SUMMER MEETING. OBSONO WINS A DOUBLE. (By Telceraph—Press Aslociation.) Dunedin, December 27. ! The Dunedin summer, meeting, was concluded to-day in splendid weather. ■ ihe attendance was, good, but hot so large as yesterday. The sum of .£9143 was put through the machine as against ,£6435 on the corresponding day last year, making a total of ~£18,695 iOs. for the meeting, as compared with .£14,771.105. in. 1909. Ten bookmakers were licensed. An objection has been lodged against the owner of Armstrong, .winner of "the Salisbury Handicap yesterday., on , the ground 'that the horse- was ineligible to start, having won the Apprentices' Plate at ■ the Ivew Zealand Cup meeting. The , matter is still under the consideration of the stewards. Results:— ~ MILBUEN ■ HURDLES, of 100 sovs. One " mile and a half. ...'
