HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) A young man named Charles Holmes was arrested at Petone yesterday by Sergeant Forster, on a charge of theft of an overcoat and leggings, tho property of tho N.Z. Government. Ho was brought before .Mr. 1!. J. Southgate, J.P., and admitted to bail, to appear at Palmerston North on December 2S. At tho Petone Court yesterday, before Mr. B. W. Short, J.P., Robert Cormick, charged with drunkenness, was fined 55., in default 21 hours' imprisonment. A meeting of tho Hutt Valley Tramway Board was held at Petono last ni"ht, when thoro wero present: Messrs. M Ewan (chairman), R. _ Stevens, Southgate, Baldwin, and Austin. A solicitor's account, amounting to .£69 15s. lid., caused some discussion, members remarking that the charges on the various • items appeared to be heavy. Tho ohairman remarked that the account could not be met until somo' rates were forthcoming. Subsequently, tho chairman and Messrs. Southgate-aud Stevens were appointed a sub-committeo to consider tho account and bring down a report at next meeting. The rates, as already struck by the board, were confirmed. Slessrs.
