FALL DOWN A SHOOT; (Br TeleEraph.—Press Association.) ■Asilburton, December 23. A married man named Walter Jones, while working at the Fairfield Freezing Works this morning, accidentally fell down a shoot, and sustained injuries so serious that he died shortly after removal to the. hospital. AN OLD, MAN'S DEATH. Auckland, 1 December 23. An old . man, named James Jerrf Hoyes, a -resident of Devonport, met with a fatal accident about three o'clock this afternoon. He was crossing the road in Queen- Street near Fort Street, and hesitated a moment, apparently undecided ivhat to do when a bicycle, slowly ridden by a man named Bush, collided with him, knocking the old man down. Hoyes was; taken to'the hospital where he was found to bo suffering from concussion. He gradually saak, and died afc 5.30 _p.m. His ags was .76 Shears. The cyclist was on the proper side of tho road, and also received a nasty tumMe. DEATH FROM BLOOD POISONING. The' City Coroner (Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) held an inquest at the. Hospital yesterday afternoon, concerning the death, of. a child named Arthur Ernest Sievers, 6i years of age, who was admitted to the institution on Thursday evening and who died at 1 a.m. yesterday. _ , Evidence adduced at the inquest was to the effect that tho child was at tho residence of his grandparents at Takapu, near Johnsonvilld, on Friday," Decelnber 9. , Tho copper was being used that day and the child, unobserved, had climbed on to it and' was jumping' on it when his left foot went into the water and portion of his. leg was scalded. He told his grandmother that he thought that tho steam was smoke. His mother applied poultices and then called ill medical aid and the patient appeared to bo" progressing well, until December 21, when ho took a bad turn.- On Thursday, tho . doctor ordered bis removal, to the Hospital and his mother accompanied him there and remained with him until he passed away. Dr. Philip Randal Woodhouse, house surgeon of the Hospital, stated that the causo of death was acute blood poisoning. A : verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony.
