The wards will bodecorated • specially for the occasion, and patients will bo allowed to .vjsiors from ten in the morning till four in tho afternoon. All the patients will receive, gifts -of various kinds, and there yill, of course, be a special Christmas dinner on Sunday for those pot, strictly, dieted- On Christmas Eve night there will be carol singing by the nurses, who-have formed a choir and will visit the wards and sing to the -patients. It iB needless to say how much'the children are looking forward the event, and speculating as to what they'will receive, those of them, who aro .well enough for such excitements. At the Home of Compassion.

Judging by all that one hears is being "d6ne for the children in Wellington 0 there should be very few who do not have so'me kind: of festivity' to- mark Christmas-Day as . being one to be remembered and to look forward to again next' year. • ..At' the Home of. Compassion at Island Bay the children's'eyes will be gladdened this afternoon by tho Bight of a most beautiful Christmas tree, simply covered with fascinating toys.' A most artistic touch is added to its adornment by the addition of ripe red cherries peeping out from among its fojiage, gathered by the Rev. Mother Aubert-herself. in spito of .all the heavy calls that have been made upon people, there' have been .found many generous helpers. The committeo who have had the arranging of matters consists of Mrs. Rdlloston, Miss Eileen Ward,. Miss' K; M'Ciisker,. 'Mr. G. Weight, -Mr. 8,. Ward and Mr. Amodeo (secretary). - A concert will,. also be given in ivhich the following will.'take part.:—The Misses.; Agnes aiid Rosie Segrifcf,'Miss Flux, Miss M'Enroc, Miss O.Sandlant, Miss M'Donald, and' others. . Altogether, a very happy ' time

Christmas at the Army Homo. Christmas festivities will be. kept ,up at the Salvation Army Children's Home on Tuesday, instead of on Christmas ';Eve day this year.' There will bo a Chrismas :treo, and of course a Christmas dinner, and perhaps it is difficult to say who is looking forward to . the ovent more, the children or those who are in charge of them.. Last Monday an early .visit was paid them from'a Father and Mother Christmas and a big teddy bear, Mr. Kersloy, of the Economic, being responsible for it. For the past fortnight batches of the'.children, (there are at least fifty, and some of them not more than two years of ago) have been ' spending in turn a few days out at'lsland Bay, where a cottage lias been placed at the disposal of the auth-nities " tor. the use of the children. Needless ,to say. thoy have thoroughly eijcjed 'their outings, aiid have benefited gteat- , ly in health from them. At the Ohlro Home. Christmas will bo quietly but enjoyably spent by the inmates of the Ohiro Home. There will be no. special celer bration. of any: particular, kind, beyond the Christmas dinner,..many.-of.-'• ..them' going out to see their friends. On Wednesday a garden party will in all probability be held at. the. home, when •' a very pleasant time should be'spent. ' The Joys of Christmas.' Surely children of to-day miss, very much of the pleasure that used to como with Christmas some years ago. There was nothing to: equal the anticipation' with , which one regarded: the mystery of hi 3: visits—where he'came froui,,what he was like,\and what precious desire he 'would gratify.' ' Nowadays.they are too. sophisticated .to be beguiled with such ..deceptions, even the tiniest one seeming to know quite well who Santa Claus is. For the;, matter ■ of that, Santa Claus

pays but few visits now. .: He is. quite unnecessary when all are marched off to a tho-toy shop, to: choose for themselves what they most hanker for. The trouble begins when they get there, and want ever so many things which they cannot possibly have. Small wonder that, the mother (sometimes the father), the. aunt, or the big sister wear a frenzied look, i with the problems which they are upon to solve at times. , from..one distracting toy .to, : another the small folk wander, like, bees over the flowers, 1 . with the difference that the bees know what they want, and the children often do not. Shrieks of delight are heard everywhere, as they como across some wonderful mechanical device, some of them even dancing before the object of their wild delight. Everywhere the sound of squeakers, trumpets, whistled, . and many, weird, musical (?) instruments are heard, till the noise of the passing trams seems ■comparatively mild compared to them. Along the streets they stream,' multitudes of parents and children, mostly children, till it seems as though all the homes, in the city must have emptied themselves into the by-ways and highways, and at every window filled with toys the children-stop and gaze ecstatically at the glories displayed for their beguilement. "iTo-day,' however, ends it all, aud next week the sound of t ; squeaker, the drum, and all the other things will cease to bo heard in such volume.

.Miss 'Amodeo leaves for England and Europe on Thursday, where she will join her brother. Miss Bright arrived in town on Thursday, and left the same day for Timaru, wliero she will spend part of tho Christmas holidays. ■ Mr. and Mrs. J. E. 0. Spicer Auckland,' are spending the Christmas holidays with Mrs. 0. W.'Adams, Bellevuo Road, Hutt. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Adams and family, Telford Terrace, left for Akaroa on Friday, where thoy will spend tho Christmas holidays. ' Day's Bay promises to be the centre of great attractions during the holidays, . and a special service of ferry steamers has been arranged for. On Monday there will be the tennis tournaments, a beauty show, and a grand fireworks display in the evening. The water-chuto will add its share to tho entertaining of people, and there will be various side shows. This afternoon the laying of tho foundation stone of the Church of St. Hilda, at Island Bay, by the Right Rev. the Bishop of 'Wellington will 'take place. It is expected that there will be a large gathering of people. present. Afternoon tea will be provided by the ladies of the parish in St. Hilda's
