POPULAR PILOT HONOURED,

Wanganui, December 22. The town antl suburban schools broke up for the Christmas holidays to-day. , Captain Irvine, who retires from the position of pilot at the end of the month, was yesterday tho recipient °£ ?■■D resp Dtatiou from the business men ot tho town, of whom there was a lar'e and representative gathering. Speeches eulogistic of his .long ami faithful services were made by several of those present, special reference being made to the small number of accidents to shipping during Captain Irvine's occupancv of (;ho position of pilot. Mr. J. B. Murray chairman of tho Harbour Board, on behalt ot those present, then presented Contain Jrvine with a purse 0 f sovereigns and a cigar ease, in recognition of the obligations which .the"business community owed to his efficient: pilotage. - .Oaphm Irvine briefly and feelingly replied, after which his health was honoured with- enthusiasm, and . the wish expressed that lie might- live :niany years to enjoy his well-earned rest. . •
