CI'ICKET I.OOIWNG Ul\ (From Our Special Correspondent.)' Palmerston North, December 22. The Palmerston Choral .Society gave an excellent rendering of the oratorio-"The Messiah" at the Opera House last' night, in aid of the; funds for the purpose of erecting a children's ward at the Palmerston Hospital. There was a fair attendance of the public, which tcMiiicd its appreciation by frequent applause. The soloists were: Madame Brings, .Mr. Sidney Butler, and Mr. .James Boherty, and they acquitted themselves very well indeed. Mr. Mauricc Cohen ' was conductor. A slight shock of earthyuake was felt in Palmerston shortly before 9 o'clock last night. A successful floral fete was held at Fox ton yesterday, in aid of the public school funds. There were very large entries m the ilu.ral decorative sections, which wcro judged by the Mayoress of Palmerston, Mrs. J. A. 2?ash. The school presented by the chairman of the Wangamii Education Board, Mr. V. Pirani, who gave an appropriate and interesting address to tho children. There were a number of stalls, which did good business, and the school fund benefited to a substantial amount.
The Wednesday Cricket Championships of the Manawatu Association wore continued on the Palmerston sports grounds yesterday, afternoon, the matches played resulting in wins for Phoenix "B team against the Manawatu Club, and for Hie High School against the City team. ; Tho light was bright and the pitches in good order, and consequently some good form was shown. For the Phoenix team, Greer puc 03i 58 by vigorous batting, his score including number of fours, a five, and a six. M'Jvenzie batted attractively, nul had compiled 51 when lie retired. Boon also put on a well-played 31. Jii the City v. High School match, the young players J. Bennett, Young, and lianna did remarkably well, contributing 43, 48, and 22 respectively. Davidson 46 (out out), •and M/Leavt-ry 33, were the best scorers for City.
The Now Zealand Farmers' Dairy Union for the month of November paid out £7882 lis. Id. for milk for the manufacture of butter, and £1173 175.. Bd. per week for the manufacture of cheese, the lour highest cheques being £111), £80, £77, and £6S. The butter manufactured was just over 100 tons, being an increase or twelve tons for the corresponding month of the previous year. Choeso made ■weighed 28 tons, which is a slight decrease on the quantity manufactured in the same moutli last. year.
