Hornabrook, a .member of the Lxehange, who is to be married : next week, was the recipient of a' wedlimr gift from the Wellington ShaTebrokers'- Association. There was a- full' muster of members, and in a brief speech the chairman, Mr. A. T. Bate, asked Mr. Hornabrook to accept a piece of plate, which, was suitably inscribed, and wished-him. on belialf' of the members, all happiness. Mr. Hornabrook thanked the members for their gift, and the prospective bridegroom's health was afterwards drunk in bumpers,.
Tho Hon. .W. M. Hughes, Federal Attorney-General and Acting-Prime minister of the Commonwealth, has written to a Wellington friend, promising to pay a short visit to New Zealand in January next, if relief from official duties for a week or'two can be arranged.
The appointment of Mr. W. H. D. Bell as Vice-Consul of Denmark, at Wellington, has been officially recognised.
Lieut..-C01..' W. C 4. Duthie, Ist Battalion Wellington Rifles, has. receivodthe award .of. the Colonial .Auxiliary Forces' long-servico medal, he having a total service to Octobor 31, 1910, of 20 years and 47 days.-

Mr. Claude W-ickett, of the staff of tlie C. and A. Odlin Timber and Hardware Co., Ltd., was, on Wednesday, presented with a clock from his fellow employees, and an. afternoon tea service from his employers, on the occasion of his approaching marriage.
The Rev. Father Hasett, S.J., of .Riverview College, Sydney, arrived on Wednesday by the Moeraki, and will conduct retreats at Island Bay and Tirnaru.
At ■ the Commercial Travellers' Club last evening, Mr. L. Smith, of the staff of J. Myers and Co., was presented with a handsome set of cutlery on tho occasion of liis approaching marriage. Mr. Read, in making tho presentation, referred to tho esteem in which Mr. Smith was heldby fellow members of tho staff. ' -
Probate of the will of Clara Holmes, of Port Ahuriri, widow, was granted by tho Chief Justice, sitting in Chambers, yesterday on the application of the Public Trustee. •
Mr. and Mrs. J. .Maue'han Barnett are to spend a holiday at Kimkoltoil after Christmas.
Mr. A. H. Holmes, clerk of the Magistrate's Court at Wellington, leaves today for Wairakei, where he will spend a month's holiday. During his absence, Mr. J. H. Carrad, of the Court staff, will act as deputy-clerk.
The resignation is announced of Dr. J. M. Bell, M.A., Ph.D., F.R.G.S.. director of the New Zealand Geological Survey. Dr. Bell is resigning for family and business reasons, and intends leaving for England on March 12, his intention being to ultimately proceed to Canada, his native land. Mr. Colin Fraser, mining geologist, who has been working with Dr. Bell preparing a valuable series of geological bulletins based on original surveys, lias also resigned from tho Government service, and will leave New Zealand with Dr. Bell. Dr. Bell intends visiting New Caledonia first, in order-to report on an oil-bearing area for a Melbourne syndicate. As Director of the New Zealand Geological Survey, Dr. Bell has carried out some very important work. Since taking office in 1905 lie has .organised and. conducted a.now series of surveys,, and has personally prepared reports on the Parapara iron deposits, the Hokitika subdivision, which includes the Ross qoldfields and the Grey eo:il area, the Dun Mountain subdivision (Nelson), and AVhangaroa district (North Auckland). He also supervised reporting . on tho Whataiutu and Taranaki oilfields, and the Hniiraki goldSelds were the sub.icct of one of his geological bulletins. Mr: Fraser is a native of Coromandel, and took his degree at Auckland University.
Mr. W. H. Dempsey, postmaster at rahiatua, is now authorised to take and receive statutory declarations.
Messrs. T. Humphries,. T. N. Brodrick, H. Sladilen, and J. W. Harrison havo been appointed members of the Surveyors' Board undei-tlie Surveyors' Institute and Board ol' Examiners Act, 190 S.
