MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, December 21. Mr. Sydney Wordsworth Smith, who was married at Slast'ertoii on Tuesday, was a grandson of Dr? Smith, who was for many years in practice at. Featiierston. ;• Smut has made- its appearance in some of the wheat crops in Masterton. Tlio quantity of wheat grown in tho district is limited, so that the damago 'will not be very considerable. Mr. John Hessev, of Masterton, is endeavouring to arrange for a party of motorists to visit tho AVest Coast- of the South Island, and iiispect tlio dredging areas during tho coming holidays. Tlio consumption of gas in Masterton during tho month of November showed an increase of thirteen per cent as compared with tlio samo month last year. The net overdraft of the Masterton Borough Council at date is £5274'55. 9:1. '
_ Only 13s. were dispensed ill casual relief by the Masterton Benevolent Society during the last month. Thero appears to be an abundance of work in this district just now.
! At a meeting of tho Municipal Fire Brigade last evening a number of subscriptions were Teccived in aid of the widow and family of. the late Superintendent Lucas, cf Napier.
