-<► IFrom Cur Special Correspondent.! Palmersion, December 21. Lord Islington lias accepted the position of patron of the I'almerston branch of tlio Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. At last night's meeting of the Borough.Council, authority was given to issue a license for Messrs J. Fuller and Son's new skating rink and picture hall in George Street. The hall will seat seventeen hundred persons. A cricket match was played yesterday afternoon between a team of ladies and an eleven of the Manawatu Club. Tho men were handicapped by wearing skirts, and had to play left-handed. The ladies won. The lion, secretary of the military tournament, Captain Palmer, received a telegram yesterday from Sir Joseph aid stating that free passes on the railway between tho Bluff and Lyttelton had been granted tho Tasmanian team of artillery which is coming to take part in tho tournament. Tho Mayor will extend a welcome to tho visitors oh their arrival in Palmorston. There is to be quite a cricket festival at tho Sports Ground hero at' Christmas. On December 2G and 27, Manawatu will play Nelson; on December 28 and 29, Taranaki and Manawatu will try conclusions; and on December 30 and 31, the winners of these matches will meet. The games aro in connection with tho Lord Hawkc Cup contest. Another addition to the large buildings of Palmersto.il is contemplated. Messrs. Goldingham and Beckett applied to the Borough Council to ascertain if they could have the use of water sufficient to work a hydraulic lift in a thrce-stor.v-building which they pi'opose to erect. About eight o'clock last evening, several ladies in a trap received a .nasty shock through their horro breaking through a culvert in a Palmorston street, and falling. AVith the exception of a few scratches, however, the ladies escaped injury, tho fright being the worst part of tho incident. The monthly meeting of • St. John Ambulance Nurse Committee was held yesterday'_ afternoon, the Mayor presiding." Nurse. Lonergan reported that, irom October to the end of November, 64 visits had been paid to patients, and two patients had been discharged as cured. V arious parcels'of clothing had been received. Mosdamos Morgan , and Gill were appointed a Visiting Committee for the next three months. A cheque (the proceeds of a concert at Stoney Creek, organised by the Mayoress) was received, and a hearty vote of thanks accorded Mrs. Nash.
A largo deputation of butchers waited 011 tlio Borough Council this week, and asked that such a license fee -should bo imposed 011 hawking carts as to practically make them prohibitive. It was asserted that this system was a very insanitary way of dispensing meat, and it was therefore urced that it should bo put a stop to. The matter was referred to the Public "Works Committee.
