INVESTMENT SHAKES. A fair business was done in investment shares yesterday. Sales were reported of Jlanlt of Now Zealand at £10 145., Wellington Trust and Loan, at £7 12s. 6d.. NATIONAL MUTUAL LIFE. Tho report of the National Mutual Life Association, Limited, for the year ended September 30 last, is exceptionally good, and shows that the association has made excellent progress. The new business of £3,267,437 written during the year was nearly £53,C00 in excess of that of 19C8-9, although the latter included the business of tho Australian Alliance Company. Tho actual improvement wao. really .better than the figures would indicate, for, in the previous year's report, the new business included the reassurances of tho life department of the Australian Alliance, amounting to £253,207, which,'owing to a hitch In the negotiations, shonld not have appeared. The amount involved has accordingly been written off. Making this adjustment, the sum assured during tho past year would represent £305,811 more than that of the immediately preceding twelve months. The total ineome for the year was £1,222,668, as against £1,219,980. premiums on policies accounting for £800,149, and interest and rents to £280,862. Tho expenditure aggregated £609,835, policyholders or their representatives receiving £441,324. The insurance fund has been increased to £6.194,633. The association's assets include ' Government securities £267,•
162. and municipal and other debentures £60,638. Loans on mortgage represeut £3,507,555, and other loans £853.590. Building societies' shares stand at £47,040, and properties acquired by foreclosure at £84,172, being a reduction of £12,773 in the twelve months. Freehold property amounts to £813,979, as against a total of £717,671 iu freehold and leasehold at the cud of September, 1909. Cash in .hand and on deposit totals £394,131, that item being £231,946 more than at tho close of the previous year, in addition to which a bank overdraft has disappeared. Outstanding premiums, etc., are shown at £177,384. The balance-sheet and directors' report are to be submitted to shareholders at a meeting which is to be held at 4 p.m. on December 21.

At the annual, meeting of the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia today the chairman stated that the report, details of which wero cabled on December 13, was entirely satisfactory, and-the. mortality favourable. y In IE3B the reserve amounted to 190,950, and foreclosures to £156,700. Tho reserve was now £75,656, and thoforeclosures £34,172. . A small portion of the reserves only was required for future fluctuations. Tho total funds exceeded six millions.
