ADELAIDE DRIVERS. FACTORY INSPECTOR SUSPENDED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrielxt. ~ Adelaide, December 21. Negotiations are proceeding for a settlement of the drivers' strike. It is believed there are good grounds for hoping for an early resumption of work.* Many iirms havo Resumed carting, with tho assistance of clerks and other permanent hands. '
Sir. Blnndell, M.H.A., one of the strike leaders, has tendered his resignation as Government Whip. The Chief Inspector-of Factories has been suspended. Tho Premier (Mr. Verran) states that the suspension is the result of the inspector, without Government authority, going to the Trades Hall and demanding the names of the executives of the various unions connected with the dispute. The Premier considered that this action was like ■setting a match to fuel. The ■ latest development is. that the Jumpers at Port Adelaide have refused to handle what they consider to be nonunion cargo. SITUATION UNCHANGED. (Rec. December. 21, 1.5 a.m.) Adelaide, December 21. There is 110 change in connection with the, strike. A' full complement of police is maintained, and the men are not attempting, to interfere with traffic.
RIOTS IN WINNIPEG. STREET-CAR STRIKE, i • Ottawa, December 20. i Violent scones have occurred in connection with-- the street-car strike in i Winnipeg. . < ! Non-strikers were attacked in tho street in a blinding snowstorm. The windows of twelve cars were smashed with coal and other missiles. Many of the employees were injured. Ties chained to the rails brought the ■ cars to a standstill. BUILDING TRADE HOURS. '. Sydney, December 21. ■ The builders' labourers are demanding a forty-hour, week. . »•. v. They threaten to adopt extreme' measures. WELSH RIOTERS SENTENCED. HUGE DEMONSTRATION. (Rec. December 21, 10 p.m.) London, December 21. . Two of the strikers at Pontypridd, charged with violence and intimidation in connection with the Welsh mining riots, have been sentenced to imprisonment. Several others have been fined for intimidation. There was a huge demonstration outside the Court after the-trial, but a force of police and . military maintained order. : BIG RAILWAY STRIKE FEARED. j (1 ,; TROUBLE AT CHICAGO., (Rec. The arbitrators, who have been investigating the dispute, find it impossible to secure the concessions demanded by 'the men. - Sixty railways are affected.
