APPARENTLY A HOAX. :■" ? In a Press Association message phb« ' lished yesterday it was stated that what was purported to be-a message from, the ill-fated Duco wafe contained in a bottle, picked up. on the beach .-at Southbndge on December 20. Thia message stated that the crew were on the Auckland Islands. It was dated September 21, 1910,' and purported to ' be signed by Peter Peterson, s.s. Duco. I From inquiries made yesterday it was ascertained from the Marine Department that. the Government training- ■' ship Amokura visited these islands during November, and spent from Novem- . ber 5 to November 15 in examining the ; depots and various stations erected fir the benefit of castaways. ' Captain Hooper reports that everything; on the _ ; islands was then intact. A previous',. visit to the Auckland Islands was paidduring April of this year. ■ - . At present the "message" is still" down south, but the, Department have taken steps, to obtain it-, and it is probable that it will arrive here "tomorrow morning.
