■ ANNUAL CONFERENCE. ■ The annual conference of tho-New- Zealand Federated Hotel and Restaurant Employees' Industrial Association opened in the Trades Hall yesterday. Delegates in attendance ivcrcAuckland: Messrs. ,T. Long (secretary l Hotel Employees' Union) and 6. Martin. Dunedin: R. Breen (secretary). Wellington: T.. Helyer and E. Ji Carey. The Canterbury Union, not yet affiliated, was represented by the Hon. John Barr and Mr." J. Mulligan. Mr. T. Long was re-elected president of tho conference, and Mr. Carey jecretary. In' a sitting that lasted all dav the rules and constitution of the federation were revised, and consideration wns given to the' framing of demands for a new award., "'■■■■ ■ '>■■ |V - During the afternoon the con'ferenco drew up demands for an . award which' is to' bo' sought in Dunedin,...The. recent .Auckland and Wellington 'awards 'wero taken as a basis; but a slight improvement on the conditions therein contained was . incorporated ■ in the ■ provisional demands. ' , The delegates from tho Christchurch Union nssistcd in framing tho demands, and stated fhat similar demands would be made by. the Canterbury Union at the expiration of its existing award in April next. Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., was welcomed to the eonfercnce, and thanked-for - his efforts on behalf of hotel workers duriii"tho passage, of tho Shops and Offices Amendment Act. Sir. M'Laren, , replying, thanked the conference for its expression of goodwill,' and .urged -the need for increased Labour representation in' the House. To-day the conference will deal with a model demand for the restaurant trade throughout the Dominion, and will also resolve itself into a deputation to waif on tho Labour Department and urge strict enforcement of the amended. Shops and . Offices Act-in country districts'.
