PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From-Our Spccial Correspondent.! Palmerston N., .December 19. ' . The Palmerston Gun C'iub "held its' monthly competition for trophies ou Wednesday and Saturday* when there was- a good -attendance , ; of members- and, some excellent scores were' Jjut up,v'especially on &atui;day, ' when ;tiie strong easterly wind prevailing made the clay discs fly most;, erratically. At the end of-tho two days shoot" • Messrs.' H. Stockwell, ,'A.. Just, aiid Ct.,H. Bycroft' tied with 24 each and in • the shoot-off v 'they • were placed m tho order named.' . Whilst coming into-town this'morning on his bicycle,' and trailing behind, a motor-cycle, a young man named Percy Qreen was very heavily thrown-on the btoney Creek-Napier road .and received severe bruises. . . A splendid lot of fireworks from London have come to hand for the. display at the Naval and' Military Tournament hero on. January' 2. The collection is a' varied one, and the display will be much above the ordinary in this direction; Another feature of the .tournament-will be ■the tableau-in which the: uniforms of all the armies of the. world, will figure. Arrangement's- in connection with the' tournament are going on apace. - ' At a: meeting of the'committee of the local branch of the Society for the Prevention,of Cruelty to Animals the inspector reported. that a number of cases had been, brought in the local Court in the past two- months. ' The amendments to the: Shops: and Offices Act are worrying the local tobacconists and, hairdressers and stationers somewhat. By requisition these businesses had arranged to close at. certain hours and also to keep open till 9 o'clock p.m. for the whole week preceding Christmas. The Act over-rides this, and, although the.'proprietors can keep their shops oppn, they cannot employ any • assistants up, to the hour named. Local cricketers are in "high feather" over the win of tho ■ Manawatii representatives' against Wairarapa in the Lord Hawke Cup match.' For some , years' cricket has been at very-low, ebb in Palmerston, but this year much more life has been' thrown into tho game, and much better form displayed.:A very epjoyable garden party was held at Mr.' T. K, Hodder's grounds, Ferguson Street, on Saturday. afternoon, ■ the function .being, organised to' raise, funds, towards the extinction- of the debt on tho Cuba Street Methodist. Church Suiu day School. The. contingent of Palmerston instrumentalists who Vent to Danncvirke to assist in the rendering of the'oratorio ."The Messiah." speak .highly of the production by the choral society of . that town, and give tho conductor, Mr. J. R. Russell, great credit for the nianner in which he had trained the chorus.
