CONFERENCE AT. AVAIMATE. .(By Telegraph.—Snccial CorresuondentJ . - ; Waimate, December' 39. t -The annual conference of the New Zealand Christian. Unions belonging to the Australasian Students' Christian Union,' an undenominational bo'dy with, branches in all the universities and, many 'secondary schools in: Australasia, is;now being held in Waimate, South. Canterbury. The conference is doubly fortunate in its site, the . situation . being excellent, • and inhabitants extremely hospitable.. On Friday evening the..conference opened, with a foreword-by. Dr.' M'Laren, Missionary Secretary , for tho A.S.C.U.i emphasising, the objqct .of the conference'as primarily a search after, tho knowledge ol vGod and the. realisation of Christian duties: ' A civic, welcome ' followed, at which the' Mayor and ministers and , leaders. of various religious bodies extended hearty and appreciaUve welcome, to the' delegates... t 0n.,,-.Saturday the work "proper .'began.',, _' *;r .■:: ... .. . . ,A ? day,, passes thus':':73o-.a.m,; 9.30,. .Bible study' (the Holy Spirit).; 10.15 to 11.15, .address given by some leading Christian worker and open to every one; 11.30 to 12.30, discussions separate for men and women "on some problems in" the: year's .work; v l p.m., dinner;.afternoon, free; 6, tea; 7.30 to 8, intercessory, \prayer; 8 to '9, addrefs; 9 to 9.20, devotional meditation. < ■ The afternoons are free for study and for .recreation, the latter, being very necessary, .for...the proper., fulfilment ' of tho strenuous day's-work. Through the-hospitality of the towns- , people the students are thoroughly enjoying their, stay. A tennis tournament.has been held on the tennis'courts which, together -with the. baths, are open ;fOr the ■.use, of all .'students, and the-delegates are" 'to "be treated -to- a drive through the •AVaimate Gorge. ''' ' The conference; enables members "from different colleges and universities to meet and. discuss matters relative to, : the most- ; important work, winning thc.studerits'.for God, Its iim .is. to stimulate the. student in-his realisation of' God's'purpose in'the .world, Had :df. his purpose for him (the student) .in particular.. •„ . 'The conference has; been, up to now, .very successful, and,promises to be -*ren more successful as.it progresses. Two inspiring; addresses have been ■.delivered' by Professor ■ Picken,- of AVellington, jrho took- from his snbiect a personal statement, of .Christian'belief.
The conference ■ gives evidence of proving .in every, way, especially-: in : its deep intensity, a.very memorable 'one.' ■
