FIRES.
'"-OUTBREAK. AT'EASTBOURNE, •A BUCKET BRIGADE, . ■-.Fires; have hapjily Ijeen rare thus far in tho ;Borough' of' Eastbourne, for as things now stand appliances for'fird-fight-irig" are almost a minus Quantity. ' An; alarm was given on Saturday. ! evening last, an outbreak having been discovered in' a dwellihghoiise'owned and- occupied by ,Mr. M'Guire, 'in Eusso Street. The cause of the fire is unknown. It broke out in the ceiling of the dining-room, and quickly obtained.'a considerable hold, llappilyj a good supply , of water was available, though at. no' great pressure, from a small private reservoir close to the house. Mr. M'Guiro was' -himself at one tihie a fireman, and many Eastbourne residents turned out to lend a 'hand. Among them, were Mr.-P. E. Petherick,. solicitor, arid Mr. '.T: D.-' Avery.- To'the pcrsever-'-anco 6f"Mr..Petlierick it is in laTgo measure' due' that tho house was' saved froni destruction. - Ho quickly-' organised, a bucket brigade; and a small hose' was also brought'into play. After a severe tussle the fire .was subdued shortly after midnight. Damage, apart from that caused by water, was confined chiefly to the ceiling, in which the outbreak oc, curred, and the roof.
Some of tho amateur fire-fighters engaged; with the best intentions in the world, wero guilty of a serious error - of judgment. , They attempted to pull off some sheets of roofing-iron, and were ultimately successful in doing so. Happily, tho flames had by this time been almost extinguished. Had it been otherwise, the fire, on being afforded free vent, would have grown rapidly and probably destroyed the house.'
This is tho third fire which has occurred in Eastbourne during a 6paco of eight years. Each of the previous outbreaks resulted in a building being completely destroyed. .
DWELLING DAM4GED. • Soon after mid-day yesterday the Fire Brigade were called to suppress a blaze at 42, Wallace Street, a four-roomed dwellinghouso occupied by Mr.;; Frederick E. Hill. Tho contents of on© room were badly damaged and the rest of the house suffered from heat and smoke. Mrs. Hill had just finished preparing the mid-day meal arid had left the house for a few minutes when the flames were discovered. Tho origin of tho'outbreak is not known. The. conteuts of the house wero insured for ~£lOO in the Northern Office and tho building for .£2OO in the Atlas Office. Tho owners of the building are Messrs. Frederick and Herbert Hill,'.-trustees .for the late Frederick Hill.
