ALTERATIONS AT THORNDON.
• , THE ESPLANADE. The proposals of the Railway Department in regard to taking over apportion of the Thorndon Esplanade were considered by the City Council last evening in committee. Afterwards the Mayor made the. following .statement to representatives of the pros:—"Mr. Ronayne (General Manager of Railways),, on behalf of tho Minister for Railways, submitted to the council tonight a proposal in connection with the carrying of the duplicated Hutt lino over tho land .reclaimed at Thorndon to the site of the proposed neiv central station. This proposal -of tho General Manager provides for the taking, over of an uvea of lairl on the Thorndon Esplanade (oppesito the Esplanade Hotel), belonging to the city, and the transference to : the city of a similar area in exchange, therefor, in accordance with the provisions 'of the Thorndon Reclamation Act. In the plan submitted tho present crossing, opposite the Esplanade Hotel, will lie altered, and n new crossing, provided, nearer the sea, abutting on a piece of land which has ttcn reclaimed. This contains one acre, one rood,, and 25 perches. Through this .area a new road is to bo constructed'by Iho Mi nister for Rail iviys and ' properly fenced. Tho rost of the-one acre, one reod and 25 perches is (o .be top-dressed with good soil and grassed, so as to serve as a recreation reserve for children. The avenue of trees will- not .be interfered with, though the : band .rotunda will have.to be removed s-ev.v-rd about Ave feet. Iu conncction with the present esplanade, no alteration ..is proposed, but Mr. Ronayne states that in tho near future it will bo necessary, for the purpose of obtaining, a large.-, aim for station yards, to reclaim an amount equal in area to tho present psplanade, which, on the taking ov<<r of the present esplanade by the Railway Department, would be transferred to. the city." . '
The council, on due consideration, considered that the proposal was •a, reasonable one ,and within the spirit' of' the Act. Realising that an equal area of land tj that taken for railway purposes will be vested in the city, the council assented to the proposition, subject to-'the'require-ments of the city: engineer, in reference tc the covering with • proper soil of the .area msitimed in Hie pimsion ;>f a suitable crossing.
Tho Mayor stat.jd that the ■ Goacral Manager of Railways expected to liave tho Hutt double line to Wellington. in full operation by January .22, 1911. Of the alteration in areas, Mr. Wilford remarked that access from the Hutt Road to its raservo remained with tho council. Tf in the future it became necessary to reclaim a strip of land running parallel with the present esplanade, as suggested by Mr. Ronaync, the cost (some .£20,000) would have to bo borno by tho Bailway Department.
