AN INTERESTING CAREER.

• Dr. Alexander was borji at Londonderry on April 13, 1824, aiid was educated at lonbridgo school. -He entered at Exeter College, Oxford, obtaining an honorary fourth class in tho final classical'school in 1847, and winning the Denyer prize for an essay'on "The Divinity of Our i,ord" in 1850. Ho migrated to Brasenose College,,and graduated B.A. in 1854 and M.A. in 1856;'' He won the prize for an English poem on a 'sacved subject with a poem on "The Waters of Babylon" .in 1860. The degree of D.D. was conferred •on liim by diploma in 18G7, and he received the honorary degree of D.C.L. iti 1876. In 1892 lie received the honorary degree of LL.D. from Trinity" College, Dublin. Ho was selected to recite a congratulatory ode to' Lord Derby, the new Chancellor of the University, in the Sheldonian .Theatre at Oxford in 1853. Ho was ordained deacon in 1847, and priest -in 1818. After holding, various other positions, he was appointed, to the'Bishoprio of Derry. and liaphoe on' July i 2, 1567. Dr. Alexander was select preacher at Oxford from 1870 to 1872, aiid again in 1882, at Cambridge in 1872 and 1892, and at Dublin University in 1879. He was Bampton lecturer at Oxford in 1876. Ho endowed the See of Derry permanently with .£2009 a' year'and the See. House, for which.ho received the thanks of tho Diocesan Synod of Derry and liaphoe, and a resolution of "gratitude for his largo sacrifice of income" from the Diocesan Council. He was elected Archbishop" of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland by his brother Bishops on February 25 IS9G. He is the author of: "Leading Ideas of the Gospels," Bampton lectures on "Tho Witness.of the Psalms to Christ and Christianity," "St. Augustine's Holiday" and other poems, as well as a large number of sernions, essays, reviews, charge' and poems. ■
