GOVERNMENT COMPETITION.
RAIL WAYS. V. TRAMWAYS. . . • [By Tclcgraiili.-SDMInI CorresDondcnt.l •. Auckland,-December 25. The Electric Tramways Company is ia an inconvenient and rather unenviable position , with regard to tho Christmas holiday on December 26. The tramways and the railways are of course the biggest carriers of passenger traffic on such occasions, and in connection with' the races at. EUerslio they, are' rival concerns in catering for the traffic. The tramways' employees will have to bo paid double r.\tes of.wages for their work on December 26, as that day will bo Christinas Day as far as they are com corned; the Railway Department is exempt frobi the legislation and award. The position has been commented upon in a strongly sarcastic 'way by _ many people, who consider it very unfair that a private concern should be saddled with the payment of increased wages, while the Government, which aims at benefiting the workers, ems free of trammel.
