Tho Marine Department is obtaining a piillion eggs in Great Britain, and theso will arrive some' time in February. They will be placed in the Government salmon hatchery at Te Anau Lake, and all the yonng fish, from the eggs will bo placed in tributaries ot' the Waiau River, which drains lakes Te Anau and. Mnnapouri. This river has been' 'selected * chiefly because' tlis '■SaWlouX are likely to do best in cold water, but once the salmon is established there an effort will be : made to introduce it in tho Mi'thern rivers.- The.- American -salmon lias already been established in the Waitftki" River, whicli runs between Canterbury and Otago.
Tho Fiji Government steamer Ranadi arrived at Auckland ;on Tuesday from Suva. Tho vessel lias como from the Islands for- tho purpose of docking'; having touched on a submerged reef at an-uncharted ■ part of tho Fiji Group recently. A diver was sent, down,' and -effected temporary repairs,' the. vessel then returning '■ to Suva, where she was ordered on to Auckland.
Differences of opinion between the Wellington Harbour Board and certain owners of property as to ..the.value of lands taken at 'Miramar for the reclamation works will come before a Compensation Court this morning: Samuel Morrell is claiming i'GOO, and the board has offered him .£<l7s. Isabella Stout Cresswell Meredith, of Christchurch, and Otto Neugent Newman, of Wellington, claim .£475, and the board's offer to them ; is ~£2BO. Mr. Justice Cooper will preside, and the assessors are Mr. W. M. Hannay (for the board), and Mr. A. L. Wilson (for the claimants).
The Government have accepted the tender of Messrs. .Tosjpli Nathan and Co., of AVellington, for the supply of fifty, tons of galvanised-iron wire, .25 tons of copper wire, and; 100,000 Lecianche zincs for. the use' of the electrical branch of the Post and Tolegraph Department.
One or two campers have been granted permission to erect tents at Lyall Bayon payment of 2s. ,6d. for a permit.' The Mayor stated last evening tliat'it was hoped next year to make complete arrangements for camping at the bay, iso that permits could be freely issued.. Meantime strict supervision would be exercised, and stringent conditions as to sanitation and other matters would bo imposed.
Mr. Justice Cooper will-probably commence to-morrow tho hearing, of the case of George liill and others v. Oswald Beerc, -a claim for, revocation, of the probate of tho will of the late Herbert Bill. It was stated yesterday that some 40 witnesses- had been called in this case. It was stated in the Supreme. Court yesterday'.that the case of Julia Sarah Major v. Charles Edwin Major, wife s petition for judicial separation, had been settled. , ' •Mr. Willis, secretary to the Ho'spital and Charitable Aid - Board, desires to acknowledge the sum of_.E2.ss. Od. from the secretary of the Newtown ■ School (Mr. Chinchen), this being a subscription from the infants of the school to provide articles for 1 the . Christmas tree'at tho Children's Hospital. A Rotorua correspondent states that the Government has entered into-negotia-tions for the lease of the thermal baths at Whakarewarewa to Hancock and Co. and L. D: Nathan and Co., of Auckland, on what is described as most favourable conditions from a public point of view. One clause .in tho agreement provides that if the baths are not. conducted to the satisfaction of the Government they will resume ownership and control. . No change will eventuate in the bath arrangements, and the public charge will bo the same.

The officials of the Post and Telegraph Department are evidently impressed with the efficaev of fevro-concreto poles for the carriage of electric lines. In this week's Gazette the Department, through Mr. J. K, Logan, calls for - tenders for the supply and delivery of 1015 ferroconcrete poles.

The street-tarring operations have reached the eastern side of tho city. Tho latest thoroughfares which have been treated are'Blair Street (which runs, between Courtenay Place and Victoria Street past the fruit markets), and that very wide and dust-blown section of Clyde Quay between tho eastern terminus of Victoria Street and the northern end of lvent Terrace. With Cambridge Terrace, Tory Street, and Taranaki Street well tarred, Wellington South should be rendered pretty well immune from tho dust nuisance. Permission is given the. Picton Borough Council in tho current Gazette to' occupy a certain part of the foreshore of Picton Harbour for the purpose of constructing swimming baths. The order forbidding the forwarding of correspondence to the Watvvorth Company, of Sydney, is removed by a notice m this week's Gazette. January iil is the date by which payments under the Land and Income Tax Act must be made. Tho amount, according to a Gazette notice, must lie made in one sum to the Commissioner of Taxes at Wellington. .The City Council has granted the proprietor of certain premises in Mercer Street permission to convert the building into a picture theatre, provided the front i? set back 4ft. Gin. from the existing frontage, and also subject to conditions imposed by tho City 'Engineer. The engineer (Mr. Morton) explained, in reply to a question, that under the bylaws picture theatres were permitted, only ■in streets with a width of 49ft. Gin. or more. . Mercer Street being only 45 feet wide, it had been decided to insist on the front of the building being carried back 4ft. Gin., as stated. The otherccnditioiis reluted to structural delaiU, which had not yet been considered. The results of the "Trafalgar Day" essay competition for the schools of the Imperial Dominions are announced by the Education Department. On _ Trafalgar Daj;, 1909, the British and Foreign Sailors' Society offered a number of prizes in the shapo of artistic plaques, made of Nelson copper, suitably inscribed and bearing the initials, of his late Majesty, King Edward VII, to pupils in the colonies for the best essays on Arctic explorers and the benefits arising from their discoveries, with a map of tho northern polar regions. New Zealand,, reports the secretary, has again done specially .well. The largest number of competitors come from the North Island, but in' point of ability tho average of tho essays from schools in the South Island gives them the palm. The By-laws Committee reported to tho City Council last evening: that they had had 'before them an express, driver who had recently been convicted for drunkenness. Shower-baths are to be erected by City Council in the dressing sheds, at Lyall and Island Bays for the use of bathers.
■ Tho City. Council last evening decided to take proceedings, in terms of the Municipal Corporations Act, in order to reduce the level of- the southern end of Coromandcl Street.
Notices are to bo erected,at the Queen's Drive, Maianui, antl Cliff'Eoad, Rosencath, calling the attention of motorjsts to the danger to children, caused by fast motoring on such roads, and the City Engineer has been authorised to cut away part of the bank obstructing the view of Cliff Road. "Don't you think wo ought to pass a by-law restricting the smeed of motor-cars?" asked Councillor Fletcher when the clause was under review. "Yes, I do, really," replied Hie Mayor. "I do 'think some motorists drive very fast indeed."
