(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, December 15. The Palmerston Amateur Athletic Club .held an evening meeting on the sports ground yc-sterday,' when three events were contested. The ,220 yards handicap was won by the back-mark man, Wulden, from 7 yards; .Waters, 20 yards, 2;.Parker, 20 yards,' 3. Bight others started. Walden got to the taps first by a foot. The high .jump. resulted ill a tic between Waters (ser.) and Horn (3 inches), the stick being cleared at sft. lin. Eleven started in the mile handicap, which was wen by Moxon (50 yards), with X. Johnston (110 yards) 2, ,1). Park (70 yards) 3. The garden fete promoted by St. Peter's Ladies' Guild, and held in Mr. T. ,R. Moore's grounds, yesterday afternoon and evening, was - a great success. Wallace presided, and most of the clergymen of the town were also on the platform. The Australian artillerymen .who are to visit New Zealand and compete at 1 the Palmerston military and naval tournament on January 2 will be well provided with horseflesh. .Lieutenant D. Buick, son of Mr; D. Buick, M.P., has the matter in hand, and has secured a splendid teain
of hunters for the use of the Australians, vrlio have entered for most of the "mounted events. The horses, which are all reputed jumpers, are being .well schooled for the work that will be expected"of them, and if the Australians do not. distinguish themselves in this particular branch, it will not.be the fault of tho horses, which will be placed at their disposal. The Palmerston-North Fire Board,held its quarterly meeting yesterday,, but only routine business was dealt Tho superintendent reported- that 't<■ e b::gado had received 19 calls-to fires Crem July 1 to December 9.
