Mr. Taft's reported intention to appoint a negro lawyer, Mr.-William .Lewis, to bo Assistant Attorney-General of the United States has aroused much indignation. Mi. Booker T. Washington, of the Tuske.gee Institute, the well-known negro educator, supports Mr. Lewis. • The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Joseph Cannon, denounces the appointment. -; The agitation., will probably result in the postponement of the appointment.
