There being some doubt in the minds of many business people •as to whether the Public Holidays Act, recently passed, would come into operation before Christmas, Mr. H. Broadhead, secretary of the Canterbury's . Employers' Association, wrote last week to the Minister of Labour on the subject, and yesterday received, the following telegram in reply: "I regretthat your-letter of the 6th inst. waa overlooked. The. Public Holidaj-s Act came into force on being assented to by: his Excellency." The first holidays to. be affected by the ,new statute will be : Christmas Pay and January 1 nest. It is enacted that, wherever these days ara provided for as holidays in any. Act or in; any award or industrial agreement, and' they happen to fall on a Sunday, they must be observed on the following day (Monday). • .
