A PROMISING PIANIST.

i ; :«. ■~. ..■.\',k !v . MR.'ERIC WATERS'S DEBUT. ' Mr. Eric Waters, a young Wellington pianist, whose articles with Mr. Robert Parker expire with the present year, gave a recital at the Sydney Street Schoolroom last evening, before a fairly largo gathering. Mr. Waters is already known to the public as an accompanist of considerable merit, and tho quality of his first performance as a soloist encourages tho. belief that with diligent study ho should achieve distinction as a musician. Conceding the presence of somo nervousness in his unaccustomed role of principal performer, one is bound to congratulate the pianist on his success, as his programme of items was an ambitious one—Bach's "Prelude and Fugue in C Sharp Major," the "Waldstein" Sonata. (Mendelssohn), Schubert's Impromptu in A. Flat Minor, Chopin's celebrated Fantasia in F Minor, the Moszkowski "Caprice Espagnole," and 'Raffff's "Rgauddn"—in tho performance thereof the young pianist showed. admirable musicianship. ■ His sense of rhythm is ■ sound, his technique fairly good on the whole, and his interpretation, if. not. exactly eloquent, is at least'- expressive. , Mr. Waters was assisted by Miss Chaddio Boauchamp, a young soprano singer, who contributed to the programme three of Liza Lehmann's charming bird songs: "The Starling," "Tho Wren," and "The Owl," Saint'-Saens's "Ainions Nous," and Weskcrlin's "Bergere Legere," and another of Liza Lehmann's—"You and I." Miss Beaucliamp's voice, though somewhat "small," is of a'very agreeable quality., and should gain in power and compass as the singer gains confidence. Mrs. Bell played the accompaniments.
