Mr., Hughes, tho Acting-Primo .Ministor, in continuing his speech at tho welcome to the Australian destroyers, said lie hoped never to see the day when the Australian Navy would bo , put to the test, but if ho did ho would then be glad that he had dono something to prepare for that test. This nucleus of a navy was not a menace of war. The Stato Premier (Hon. Mr. Murray) claimed'that if Australia had tho opportunity sho would be able to show : that she eould build as good ships as any part of tho world. LIEUT. ROBERTSON'S DEATH. Melbourne, December 12. It appears in connection with EngineerLieut. Robertson's death that . as tho steering gear of tho Yorra was not working smoothly, Engineer-Lieut. Robertson went aft to inspect it. : A roll of tho vessel threw-him overboard, and he received a wound on tho head, probably from the propeller. . . LOCAL CONSTRUCTION BEGINS. (Rec. December 12, 9.50 p.m.) ■ Sydney, December 12. The building of the Warrcgo, tho third Commonwealth destroyer, is proceeding at Cockatoo Island. The various parts for the vessel were brought from England, and aro being put together by the local workmen.
