Sale of Work at Makara. A sale of worl: was opened in the Anglican Church at Makara yesterday afternoon by Mr. J. P. Luke, Ml'., who was accompanied by Mrs. Luke and Hiss 'Hollo Luke. A satisfactory amount of business was transacted, and there were some very attractive articles as well as useful ones offered for sale. The stallholders were as follow:—Ueneral stall, Mrs. Garvis, Hiss Ruth Trotter; gift stall, Jlrs. Kobinson; flower stall, Mrs. Hislop niid- Miss Monk; tea-room, Mrs. Smith, and the Misses Trotter (1), and Hawkins; produce stall, Mrs. Bowler; lollie. stall, Sirs. Shotter and Miss Anderson,: Mrs."Robinson, who attended to the gift stall is air'old lady of some eighty-four or five years snd came all the way from Levin in order to take it,. as she has done for so ninny years. She is known as the "Mother of Mukara." Two recitations were given by Miss Belle Luke during the afternoon. Bazaar at Petone. The annual bazaar and salo of work in connection . with the •. Petono Baptist Church was opened by the Mayor (Mr. J.W. M'Uwan) yesterday ait«ruaou. The attendance -was excellent and business transacted both in the' afternoon and evening was very gratifying. The stalls are daintily arranged and numerous sideshows greutly amused everyone present. Tho cooking competition .was won by Mrs. Brough (sponge roll), Miss Arnold (sponge sandwich), Mrs. Burn (seed cake), Mrs. Foster (white scones), Mrs. Williams (brown scones). The bazaar will bo continued till to-night and each evening a bright concert programme will be given. Mrs. Findlay will. accompany tho Hon. Dr. Findlay on his visit to England in March next."'The route by which the ; tourists will proceed has not yet been finally settled. ' The engagement is , announced of Miss Louie Turnbull, eldest daughter of Mr. W. TurnbuU, of Wellington, to Mr. A. C. Cooper, eldest son of Hi.
